The Fiqh

The Fiqh According to Ayatullah Sistani

We have included a general Islamic basis for the boycott and the fiqh of one of the scholars of Shiite Islam, Ayatullah Sistani. Please note, most other maraja have very similar rulings, and we encourage you to do full research into the matter. If you are not Shiite, or Muslim, we're sure you can find a proper moral basis according to your own beliefs in the value of human rights and justice worldwide that should also inpsire you to propel the movement to boycott Israel forward.

Imam Jafar-e-Sadiq (a) said, “I would not (even) like to tie a knot for them, or to fasten the strings of a water-skin for them, even though they may offer to me what is between the two (the heavens and the earth), nor would I like to elongate the stroke of a pen (for them). Surely the helpers of the oppressors will be surrounded by a curtain of fire on the day of Judgment until the Lord has judged between His servants."

Usul al-KÁfi, vol. 5, pg. 107

To clarify the last slide, there is a fiqhi difference between the following:

  • Israeli Products: Products that have been made in Israel or have Israeli ownership of companies. It is haraam to buy or sell these products.
  • Israeli Companies: These are companies that are based in Israel or have products made in Israel (factories and such).
  • Companies that sell their products in Israel: These are companies that invest in Israel and their brand of products are sold there. (For example, Pepsi products being sold in Israel) It would not be haraam to purchase from these companies in other countries, although in general, it could be better to boycott them.
  • Companies that support Israel: These are companies that either (a) openly support Israel and Israeli policies or (b) the owner/CEO/majority shareholder openly supports Israel. Buying and selling from these companies would also be haraam.
It is always haraam to buy or sell Israeli products, but not necessarily wajib to boycott companies who sell these products unless the company openly supports Israel. In general, it is better to boycott companies that carry Israeli products.
